Smile design
Smile design plans the shape, length, colour and position of your front teeth in relation to your face, gums and lips, before any tooth is changed. At Suman Dental Care it is planned by Dr. Nimisha Pandya, a dental surgeon (BDS) who provides cosmetic and restorative dentistry.
Step by step
Smile design
- Before
- Treatment
- After
Planning takes 1–2 visits over about a week, and treatment adds 2–3 visits over a further 3–6 weeks, depending on what is chosen.
Smile design plans the shape, length and shade of the front teeth around your face before any tooth is touched, so you can see and agree the result first. The aim is a natural look that suits you. It also checks that the teeth and gums are healthy before any cosmetic work starts.
- Chipped, worn or uneven front teeth
- Gaps, or teeth of different sizes
- Discolouration that whitening cannot fix
- Anyone planning veneers or crowns on front teeth
Recovery depends on the treatment you choose. After veneers, crowns or bonding, teeth can be sensitive to hot and cold for a few days and the gums can feel tender. Temporary restorations, if used, can come off, so avoid sticky and hard food.
After gum contouring, eat soft food for a day or two and keep the area clean as advised.
Brush twice a day and clean between your teeth. If you grind your teeth at night, wear the night guard your dentist makes.
- Irreversible tooth change: veneers and crowns involve removing some enamel. Bonding changes less, but may also need some preparation.
- Sensitivity after preparation is common and usually settles.
- Chipping or staining: bonding stains and chips more than ceramic. Veneers and crowns can chip, particularly in people who grind.
- Results may differ from the trial smile because teeth and lips move differently in real life. This is checked at the mock-up stage.
- Gum inflammation can develop around restorations if cleaning is poor.
- Replacement: restorations wear and need replacing after years.

Questions patients ask
What is a trial smile?
A temporary resin copy of the planned design, placed over your teeth without cutting them. It lets you see and judge the shape and length before final work starts.
Veneers or bonding?
Bonding applies tooth-coloured composite directly, usually in one visit, and costs less but wears sooner. Veneers are thin ceramic shells made in a lab, and last longer. Your dentist will explain which suits you.
Is smile design only cosmetic?
It is mostly cosmetic, but it also covers the health of your gums, bite and teeth. Gum disease or decay is treated first.
Can braces be part of it?
Yes. If the teeth are crowded or uneven, braces or aligners may come first. See orthodontic treatment.
Will I look natural?
The aim is a shape and shade that suit your face, and the trial smile lets you judge this first. You should not agree to the final work unless you are happy with it.
