Your First Visit

What happens at a first visit to Suman Dental Care: how long it takes, what to bring, what the dentist checks, and how costs are explained before any treatment.

What to expect

A first visit is mostly a conversation and an examination. Nothing is done to your teeth until you have been told what the dentist found and what the options are.

How long it takes

A longer visit is possible if you need X-rays or if there are several concerns to discuss.

What happens, step by step

  1. Welcome and form. You fill in a short form with your details, your medical history and the reason for your visit.
  2. Your story. The dentist asks about your symptoms: where it hurts, when it started, what makes it better or worse.
  3. Examination. The dentist looks at your teeth, gums, bite and jaw joint. Some of this is gentle probing and tapping.
  4. X-ray if needed. A small X-ray of the area may be taken so that the dentist can see what is under the surface.
  5. Explanation. The findings are shown to you and explained in plain words. You are told what needs treatment now, what can wait, and what to watch.
  6. Options and estimate. If treatment is advised, you get the options and a written estimate. You decide when to start. See how treatment costs are explained.

If your problem needs an endodontist, an oral surgeon or an orthodontist, they work in the same clinic, so the referral is within the building.

What to bring

  • Any earlier dental X-rays, scans or treatment records.
  • A list of the medicines you take, including for blood pressure, diabetes or blood thinning.
  • Notes about any allergies, especially to medicines or anaesthetics.
  • A family member or friend if you are anxious or if you are bringing a child.

If you are in pain

Questions patients ask

Will I have treatment on the first visit?

Usually the first visit is for examination and planning. If you are in pain or something needs urgent attention, the dentist may do a first step the same day. Otherwise nothing is done until you have agreed to the plan.

Will the examination hurt?

Looking, probing and X-rays should not hurt. If a tooth is already sore, tell the dentist where, and they will go gently. You can raise a hand at any time to pause.

Can I bring my child?

Yes. Read about children's dentistry and the guide on a child's first dental visit.

Do I have to tell you about my other health conditions?

Yes. Conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and pregnancy, and medicines such as blood thinners, can change how dental treatment is done. Your information stays with the clinic. See the privacy notice.

How will I know what the treatment will cost?

After the examination, the dentist gives you a written estimate before any treatment starts. The page on dental treatment costs explains what affects it.
