First aid by situation
Knocked-out adult tooth
- Hold it by the crown, not the root.
- Rinse briefly in milk or clean water; do not scrub.
- Keep it in milk, or in your cheek if you are an adult.
- Be seen within 30–60 minutes.
Broken or chipped tooth
- Rinse with warm water; keep any pieces in milk.
- Cold pack on the cheek for swelling.
- Avoid chewing on that side.
Bleeding after an extraction
- Bite firmly on folded gauze for 30 minutes.
- Do not rinse or spit.
- If it does not stop, call the clinic.
Severe toothache
- Rinse with warm salt water.
- Take the pain relief you normally use, as directed.
- Do not put aspirin on the gum.
Lost filling or crown
- Keep the crown safe.
- Avoid chewing on that side.
- Book the next available visit.
