Dentures
Dentures are removable replacement teeth, either complete (all teeth in an arch) or partial (a few teeth, held by clasps on your natural teeth). At Suman Dental Care they are made by Dr. Nimisha Pandya, a dental surgeon (BDS).

5 visits over about 4 weeks, then adjustment visits in the first week or two as the gums settle.
Dentures replace several or all missing teeth so you can chew, speak clearly and support your lips and cheeks. They are the simplest and most widely used way to replace many teeth, and they can be combined with implants for better grip. They need time to get used to.
- Several or all teeth missing
- People who cannot have implants
- Partial dentures for a few gaps
- Implant-supported dentures for more grip
New dentures feel bulky and can make speech and chewing awkward at first. Expect extra saliva and sore spots for the first 1–2 weeks. Practise reading aloud, start with soft food cut into small pieces, and chew on both sides at once.
Do not file a rubbing spot yourself. Come back for an adjustment. Wear the denture as advised, and take it out at night to rest the gums.
Clean the denture over a basin of water with a soft brush and mild soap, and soak it overnight in water or a denture cleaner. Never use hot water, which can warp it. Keep brushing your gums and remaining teeth. See the dentures aftercare card.
- Sore spots are common at first and are eased by adjustments.
- Loose dentures: the gum and bone shrink over time. Dentures need relining or replacing every few years.
- Mouth infections: a fungal infection (denture stomatitis) is more likely if dentures are worn day and night or not cleaned.
- Remaining teeth can decay if a partial denture is not cleaned.
- Speech and taste change at first and mostly adapt in a few weeks.

Questions patients ask
How long does it take to get used to dentures?
Most people feel comfortable in 4–6 weeks. Speech usually improves in a few days. Chewing takes longer.
Can I eat normally with dentures?
Most foods can be eaten with time. Start with soft food and avoid very hard or sticky food at first. Upper dentures usually grip better than lower.
Should I sleep with my dentures in?
Usually not. Taking them out at night rests the gums and reduces the risk of infection. Store them in water or a cleaning solution.
Why are my dentures loose?
The gums and bone change shape over time, so dentures loosen. A reline or replacement usually fixes it. Implants can give a firmer hold. See dental implants.
How long do dentures last?
Most are replaced every 5–10 years, depending on wear, and the fit should be checked regularly.
