After teeth whitening

What to eat and avoid for 48 hours after whitening, how to manage sensitivity, how to look after the result and when to call the clinic.

First 48 hours

Do

  • Follow a white diet: rice, white bread, chicken, fish, paneer, curd, milk, cauliflower, potato, banana and clear water.
  • Drink water through a straw for any coloured drink you cannot avoid.
  • Use a toothpaste for sensitive teeth if the teeth feel tender.
  • Brush gently with a soft brush.

Avoid

  • Tea, coffee, red wine, cola and fruit juice.
  • Haldi (turmeric), curries, tomato sauce, beetroot, berries, soy sauce and coloured sweets.
  • Smoking, tobacco, paan and gutka, which stain the teeth.
  • Lipstick or coloured mouthwash that touches the teeth.

Days 3–14

Do

  • Bring coloured food and drinks back gradually.
  • Rinse your mouth with water after tea, coffee and curries.
  • Brush twice a day and clean between the teeth daily.
  • Use the take-home tray and gel exactly as instructed, if you were given them.

Avoid

  • Over-using whitening products, which increases sensitivity.
  • Very hot, cold or acidic food if the teeth are still sensitive.

Long term

Do

  • Have regular cleans; scaling removes surface stains.
  • Reduce tea, coffee and tobacco to help the result last.
  • Ask whether a top-up is suitable after a year or more, depending on your habits.

Avoid

  • Expecting fillings, crowns or veneers to change colour; only natural enamel whitens.
Normal while it heals
  • Sensitivity to cold air or drinks for 24–48 hours, sometimes a few days
  • Slight gum tenderness or whitening of the gum edge that fades within hours
  • Teeth that look slightly patchy or chalky for a day, then even out
  • The shade settling back slightly after the first few days

Call the clinic if

  • Sharp pain in a tooth that lasts longer than a few days
  • Gum irritation or ulcers that do not settle in 3–4 days
  • Sensitivity that gets worse rather than better after 3 days
  • A tooth that looks darker or has a spot you did not notice before
  • Swelling with difficulty swallowing or breathing: go to a hospital now
